Handmade in Nicola Gillis’s garden studio in Brighton, this stoneware beaker is wheel-thrown from an iron-rich, flecked clay and finished with a distinctive ash wood glaze. Abstract black oxide marks add a simple, organic contrast to the warm, earthy surface.
 
The ash glaze is made by Nicola using ash collected from her own wood-burning stove over winter, with wood sourced locally in East Sussex. Each piece is individually thrown, glazed and marked by hand, giving every beaker its own subtle variations in colour, texture, shape and size.
 
With a narrow base and gently widening rim, the beaker is approximately 9cm in diameter and 9cm high – a good size for a flat white or morning coffee, or used as part of a set in place of traditional water glasses at the table.
